The 12-acre park, developed with the backing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), had drawn the ire of environmentalists and the United Democratic Front because it was established in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone rules.

The order was served on the CPM-controlled society by the district administration following chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan's statement in the Assembly on Monday (19 July) that the authority had already asked the District Collector to take steps to stop the functioning of the park.

Advertisements for the park say it boasted a food court, a health court and a convention centre.

A seven-member expert committee has been formed to look into the controversial park visited the site and is expected to deliver a report within two weeks.
