Hollywood Studios Tests Long-Unused Fireworks Launch Site Overnight

Theme Park Report

Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios conducted intermittent fireworks testing overnight from a launch site across World Drive that has been largely unused for years, according to BlogMickey. The launches occurred periodically rather than as part of a continuous presentation. Videos shared in connection with the testing showed individual fireworks launched several minutes apart, a pattern BlogMickey said appeared more consistent with testing specific elements than rehearsing a complete show. The site was built in a previously wooded area ahead of the debut of Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular. Fireworks for that show launched from a position off-center from Hollywood Boulevard. An aerial view published the following year showed the launch point’s line of sight toward Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which were under construction at the time. Since Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular ended its run, Hollywood Studios has generally relied on smaller rooftop launch points for its fireworks, including its recent New Year’s Eve countdown presentations. The overnight activity therefore marked a return to the larger World Drive site, but Disney has not identified the reason for the testing. BlogMickey reported that one possible explanation is preparation for a private Hollywood Studios event scheduled for October 20, tied to the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo. The annual conference is held nearby at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin. The outlet noted that testing at this point would leave time for adjustments before the event, though that connection has not been confirmed. Another possibility raised in the report is the return of a larger fireworks component to Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM during this year’s Jollywood Nights. The holiday offering has operated without a large fireworks element in recent years, according to BlogMickey. The report also identified early work on a new Hollywood Studios nighttime spectacular as a less likely possibility. The park currently does not have a signature fireworks show of its own, but no such project has been announced in connection with the testing. Walt Disney World did not respond to BlogMickey’s request for information. The purpose of the overnight launches remains unconfirmed.
