Universal UK Resort Could Boost Northamptonshire Economy, Council Says

The planned Universal UK resort and theme park in Bedfordshire could deliver significant economic benefits for neighboring Northamptonshire, according to local officials and visitor-economy representatives. West Northamptonshire Council has backed efforts to help the county benefit from the development, which is expected to generate £50 billion for the UK economy and 28,000 jobs. The resort is due to open in 2031. Richard Clinton, chair of the Northamptonshire Local Visitor Economy Partnership, said the project could create employment in hospitality, engineering and tourism while increasing visitor numbers in the wider region. He described the resort as a major opportunity and said its effects would extend beyond Bedfordshire. Clinton also pointed to existing attractions and events in Northamptonshire, including the Formula 1 Grand Prix, as assets that could help draw visitors into towns across the county. Mark Arnull, leader of West Northamptonshire Council, said the resort had the potential to create thousands of jobs, attract international visitors and provide lasting benefits for local businesses and communities. Council leader Arnull and chief executive Martin Henry recently joined a roundtable with Universal Destinations & Experiences in Bedford. The meeting focused on how Northamptonshire and the surrounding area could maximize the project’s potential economic impact. Lawrence O’Shea, a Bedford-based theme park fan who runs the Universally Bedford podcast and website, said the development could create new opportunities for businesses and young people, including post-education career options. O’Shea said councils in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire would face the challenge of making the most of the opportunity from the outset. Arnull similarly said the resort could be transformational and that the council intended to play an active role in shaping its impact on local communities and businesses. The resort is expected to begin at a smaller scale than Universal’s Orlando park, with potential for expansion over time, according to the report.
